Chapter 709 - Visiting the in-laws: Ancient City of Kalina (Part 5)

At 8am sharp, I finally arrived at the gates of the Quillonmain household. Even before I could knock, the gates opened to let me in and out came a man that had the same eyes and hair color as Calix. He introduced himself as Runoh and he is my father-in-law, biological father of my husband. He also said that he was the one who received the letter and then he simply gave a heads up to the main household about my visit afterwards.I politely greeted him but he seemed to be absent-mindedly looking somewhere else. I saw that disappointed look on his face when he realized that I was along during this visit. He sighed and was about to turn around to guide me inside the mansion when I suddenly asked him to wait for a bit since I had to do something important before we go in.

I sent a telepathic message to Calix that I will be fetching him soon and he excitedly replied that he has been ready and dressed up for 2 hours now, just waiting for my signal. I couldn’t help but laugh a bit as I closed my eyes and disappeared from where I was standing. It didn’t take even a minute before I reappeared and this time I was holding the hand of my husband.

My father-in-law’s eyes widened and his jaws opened in awe and surprise. He pointed to me speechlessly, used his other hand to rub his eyes and finally was able to utter a soft, "mage?" He then finally looked towards the space next to me and at Calix with eyes that were starting to redden and tear up in recognition. Though it has been more than a decade, I know that he knew that it was the son he thought he had lost.

Calix immediately made a step forward and hugged his father without a word. Runoh, my father-in-law was shocked at the sudden intimacy that he never expected from the child that was away from him for so long. After a few seconds of delayed reaction, his tears finally fell as he hugged back Calix tightly. They stayed hugging, crying and whispering apologies to each other.

It took several minutes before they let go of each other, finally remembering that there is someone else here (me) and that the main household members must be waiting inside the mansion. My father-in-law hurriedly clamped his arm around Calix then my husband grabbed on to my hand as we started walking towards the main door.

As we walked in, the living room was filled to the brim with people. The elders were seated on the soft chairs while the middle aged ones were standing right behind them like guards. There were also a bunch of children running around and playing which was kind of a little off putting for me since I though this was supposed to be a formal visit and not a grand reunion or a kids’ play date.

I kept my face amicable though I already sent a telepathic message in my head to Calix about my thoughts about the whole mayhem. He also kept his face calm and collected but he replied that he honestly only wanted to meet his grandparents and those that were directly connected to him like his father’s siblings if there were any and maybe their spouses and children (his nieces and nephews). As for the other relatives from other branches, they were honestly irrelevant to this whole visit.

My father-in-law’s face turned stoic right as he stepped foot inside the mansion. I guess, there were more than just a few reasons why Runoh chose to set up his own family branch even if he was alone and he even chose a place far away from this main household to build his home.

My grandparents-in-law immediately stood up upon seeing Runoh and Calix walking in together. The three men have an uncanny resemblance with each other as grandfather, father and son shared the same hair and eye colors. The grandparents-in-law greeted me amicably as well afterwards and invited the three of nus to the dining hall for breakfast.

The dining hall was huge and had several long rectangular tables in it. By the design alone, you can understand which means that it is a normal thing for this family to share meals together with the different generations of the household.

It seems that the main household is similar to what we call a compound. The family’s land was divided between the main mansion which is right in the middle occupying the biggest part of the property and a cluster smaller houses for the other family members. The main mansion was where the matriarch lived as well as all her husbands and concubines. The other areas have smaller houses meant for their son-in-laws, daughter-in-laws, their children, and grandchildren.

Since this occasion was meant as an official family visit, the main table had Calix’s grandparents (the matriarch and his blood-related grandfather), Runoh, Calix, me and Runoh’s full blooded siblings (one sister and two brothers) and their spouses. As for their children, they had to sit in a different table because they were too rowdy.

As everyone sat down, the food was then served by the kitchen staff starting with our table. Once the food was served, we all ate and talk about family matters as well as how Calix has been since he was sent to the capital. I can see how his uncle and aunt were dismissive of him and his father. They even use sarcasm every now and then disguised as words of care and concern.

I think this family is just another mess altogether. It was a good thing that we will be staying in father-in-law’s villa during our stay here instead of this mansion.

Some of the other cousins and relatives took turns introducing themselves to our table during the meal time. Some of the younger children cutely called me auntie so I gave them a few sweets as a reward. The older ones just looked my way, refusing to acknowledge me and Calix. I guess, it says a lot about how their own parents raised them as they couldn’t even show basic courtesy.
